A Review of The 3M Peltor Tactical 6S Active Volume Hearing Protector

Headset Features:

The latest edition featuring the patented 3M-Peltor audio technology is a headset that offers superb quality hearing protection, as well as top-of-the-line audio features. Sounds over a preset decibel level, in this case the decibels generated by a gunshot, are automatically filtered out, and blocked by the headset. Lower decibel sounds, like the human voice, are not filtered out, and can even be augmented for clear reception, if desired.

Advantages:

  • Total comfort at work: when in use, the 3M Peltor Tactical 6S Active Volume Hearing Protector headset features comfortable, padded ear cups that can be removed and switched out for different users.
  • High decibel filters: when turned on, the built-in 3M-Peltor technology filters out high decibel sounds, like gunfire, sirens and alarms, and blocks them from being heard. Low decibel sounds, like the human voice, footsteps, and environmental sounds can still be heard.
  • Built-in Safety: because it filters out high decibel sounds, it allows low decibel sounds to be heard, offering a level of safety and the ability to hear what is going on directly around them. This will allow the wearer to hear traffic sounds independently, as well as movement sounds, and voices. For hunters and others in the field, this is essential to prevent needless accidents.
  • Independent Volume Control: each ear cup has its own volume control, allowing the wearer to adjust each side to its most comfortable setting.
  • Lightweight: the entire 3M Peltor Tactical 6S Active Volume Hearing Protector headset weighs next to nothing, even with the AAA batteries, less than 8 ounces total. This means that it causes no neck strain or soreness on the ears from prolonged use.

Disadvantages:

  • Low NRR. Peltor Tactical 6S hearing protectors have noise reduction rating of only 19 dB. Not best for indoor shooting range. For shooting at indoor range you are better off with headsets that offer higher noise reduction rating.
  • When replacing batteries you need to be carefull so you don’t damage the exposed unit.

Ways That You Can Test the Limits of Your Unit

Because any sensitive electronics can be damaged during shipment, the manufacturer of the 3M Peltor Tactical 6S Active Volume Hearing Protector recommends that you field test the headset before using them for active shooting sessions. There are many ways to accomplish this, but we will illustrate two possible ways for you here:

At the firing range: to test out its use at a firing range, make sure the batteries are properly inserted and adjust the volume controls to what you believe to be a comfortable level. Then you and a friend walk into the active firing range, and attempt to hold a conversation. Adjust the volume controls until you can clearly hear what your friend is saying without having to strain or speak loudly.

At a sporting event: for testing at a sporting event, choose one that is normally extremely loud, like a NASCAR race, or football game. With the volume controls adjusted for comfort, attempt to hold a conversation with the person next to you. Because high decibels are automatically filtered out, you should be able to do so without too much trouble.

If none of the above tests are successful, then your headset is not working properly. Contact the manufacturer for an immediate return.
